Several years ago, Jason walked into Zac’s Place during tough days and personal crisis. He recalls having breakfast and drying his gloves on the radiator. These simple acts of kindness made a difference in him beginning to turn things around.
A few years on life is very different. Jason has been volunteering two days a week at Rough Edges and is a valuable part of the team here.
Today he enrolled and begins a 34 week part time welding course at Gower College, which Rough Edges has been able to sponsor.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Rough Edges. We hope to be able to give more of our volunteers opportunities like this.
The volunteer crew at Rough Edges have been busy expanding the sales area and making some stylish modifications to the exterior too.
More sales area means more room for stock. Donations always sought – see the donate pages to see the kind of things we’re looking for. Got questions? Give the shop a call. We can also arrange to collect bulky donations or clear the contents of your shed.
Thanks for your interest and support!
We are now able to collect particularly bulky items or a large collection of items, such as a shed contents clearance, from you home in the Swansea area.
Contact the shop via the contact page to make an arrangement for our volunteers to collect in the van.
Please also take a look at the list of items we require and also what isn’t suitable to avoid any confusion! Thanks for your support.
Shop manager Mike gives the thumbs up to Swansea Grand Theatre for the donation of their multiple sheets of one inch plywood as the old stage top is collected.
Things continue to go very well at Rough Edges. We estimate someone in the region of one hundred people each week call in during the two and a half days we are open, many of whom have become regular callers!
Volunteer numbers are also increasing and we therefore hope to be opening an additional day soon.
At the end of this year we shall be able to put a substantial amount of money into the ongoing work at Zac’s Place, which is part of the reason for this venture.
The recent acquisition of a van, (and a waste carriers licence), means that we are able to do selected shed clearances to keep stock coming in, so please do get in touch by phone or email.
We have also doubled the area we use, now having one unit for sales and the other for workshop, store and sorting. Plans are also being made for some heating!
Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter feeds for other news updates. In the meantime, here’s a snap of our Weds volunteer crew taken this week.
Thank you for your support
Trade continues to be going well and we therefore continue to need ongoing donations of suitable items. Thanks for your support!
After a few months of operation we are beginning to get a good team of volunteers together – here are some of the faces you can expect to see at different times.
Jason is enjoying opportunity to give something back to society and has been volunteering two shifts a week.
Having retired, Richard now volunteers and can turn his hand to many things – here cleaning up some tools.
Mike on the left is managing the shop and has been an essential enthusiastic support as we have got off the ground. Jeff on the right brings important experience in the electrical department among numerous other skills.
Our deep appreciation to these guys and all the others getting involved. More pictures to follow!
We’re also grateful for unsolicited endorsements like the one below we are picking up via social media.
It continues to be developing and growing environment at Rough Edges. Stock is being generously donated at the same rate we are able to sell it, volunteer numbers are steadily increasing. We are taking our first volunteers from one of the hostels we have a close association with at Zac’s Place, so it’s great to see different aspects of our efforts crossing over. Along with volunteer support from older retired folk, it is creating a great environment – thanks for your support and interest.
We continue to be open on Weds, Fri 10-4 and Saturday 9-12.30
Here’s a few snap shots from the shop today….
Some great old bits of kit are coming through the shop…
Volunteers are involved in cleaning up donated items and making them ready for sale.
You name it we may well have it!
Providing some additional hands on deck to help clear the unit next door
It’s been a great February at Rough Edges! With growing interest and sales matching the volume of donations, stock turnover is good. Thank you!
Volunteer cover for the two and a half days we are open each week is good under Mike’s management. Our thanks to each of those getting involved, with everyone bringing different interests and gifts.
It was good to walk in today and feel a real buzz of activity and hear lots of conversation going on – a real sense of community is beginning to develop in this old workshop too.
Thanks for everyone’s interest so far – keep spreading the word! We hope to increase the days we are open soon.
There’s been quite a few photos from out the front of the shop, so here’s a few on the inside showing a selection of varied smaller items available.
All donated including the racking
Proper old school tools are there to be bought as well
Various sets available including this one for a dremmel and a router above
Preparing for a spring camping trip or even just some food whilst fishing?
Beginning to gather more angling items
Lathe bits, micrometers and other engineering curios
Tam very much at home at the work bench where tools have been cleaned up and lawn mowers fixed for use again.
This was a wonderful sight on the forecourt today – and we had a fuel pump in stock that was suitable!
Thanks for everyone’s encouraging support and feedback so far!
